De-Escalate Like A Stoic

Work toward a solution by building calm, taking charge of the situation, and taking action right now to move forward out of the past problem toward a solution.

Master yourself to master the world

You maintain control with assertive statements that keep you in charge. In the practice of Stoicism, self-mastery is the cornerstone of effectively managing conflicts and de-escalating tense situations.

By mastering yourself, you gain the power to influence the world around you with calm and assertiveness. This inner control is not about dominating others but about maintaining your composure and ethical stance regardless of external circumstances.

Be Neutral

War bleeds wealth. Cooperation does the opposite. In the world of Stoicism, neutrality, and diplomacy make powerful tools.

Like Switzerland, known for its neutral stance in global affairs, we can adopt a similar approach in our interactions. This doesn’t mean avoiding conflicts at all costs but engaging in ways that promote peace and cooperation.

By remaining neutral, you can become a stabilizing force in any situation, fostering an environment where collaboration flourishes and conflicts are resolved constructively. This approach not only conserves your energy and resources but also cultivates relationships based on mutual respect and understanding. In essence, cooperation is a golden path to sustainable success and harmony.

Treat Everyone Like Your Canine

You’re correcting the behavior and giving them a treat for responding favorably to the correction.

Stoicism teaches us to approach others with patience and compassion, much like how we train and care for our pets. When correcting behavior, focusing on positive reinforcement rather than punishment is essential.

Treating everyone with the same kindness and understanding you would show your dog creates a supportive environment where growth and improvement are encouraged.

This means recognizing good behavior, providing constructive feedback, and rewarding positive responses. Such an approach fosters a culture of encouragement and mutual respect, making it easier for individuals to accept and learn from their mistakes.

This Stoic method of interaction ensures that corrections lead to growth rather than resentment, building stronger, more resilient relationships.

A Warrior of Peace

You’re not being weak. You’re controlling the situation while setting structures and boundaries with your uncompromising ethics. In the philosophy of Stoicism, strength, and peace coexist harmoniously.

Being a warrior of peace means embodying resilience and wisdom while navigating life’s challenges. It’s about understanding that true power lies not in aggression but in the ability to maintain calm and ethical integrity under pressure.

Provide An Offramp

  1. Listen Actively: Pay close attention to the other person’s perspective. Often, conflicts arise from misunderstandings or unexpressed emotions. By listening actively, you can address the root cause of the issue.
  2. Acknowledge Emotions: Validate the other person’s feelings without necessarily agreeing with their viewpoint. This shows respect and can help calm heightened emotions.
  3. Stay Calm: Maintain your composure and avoid reacting impulsively. Your calm demeanor can influence the other person to mirror your behavior.
  4. Offer Solutions: Present alternatives that address both parties’ concerns. Be open to compromise, but ensure that any solution aligns with your core values and principles.
  5. Set Boundaries: Clearly define what is acceptable and what is not. Setting firm boundaries can prevent future conflicts and establish a foundation of mutual respect.
  6. Use Positive Language: Frame your words in a way that promotes collaboration rather than confrontation. Avoid blame and focus on finding a mutually beneficial outcome.

You Are Your Sensei!

Stoic self-mastery takes time, practice, and grace. Start today and begin catching yourself when you’re going too fast.

Squeeze your abdominals, tuck your pelvis, place your tongue on your upper palette, and breathe deeply into your chest, expanding your breastbone all the way into your throat and head. The more often you do this the more mastery over breath you’ll achieve.

If your animals are alert, you’re either under attack or forgetting to breathe. If you don’t have animals, notice your heartbeat. If you’ve taken enough potassium and your heart is still racing, remember to breathe.

Once you master breath over fight or flight response, you’ll create time and space to create a situation that suits your liking. Express your needs with empathy and directness.
